British Food Fortnight
British Food Fortnight has been running for the last 24 years, celebrating the diverse and delicious food produced across the UK. As it continues to take the nation by storm, more businesses are getting involved from schools to pubs, farmers to care homes. Our love of British food brings people together to learn, grow, cook, and most importantly… eat!
For care homes, this two week celebration has become a highlight! Special menus and activities are planned, ranging from tasting sessions and cooking demonstrations to simple themed meals. These events build a sense of community, turning mealtimes into social occasions that can reduce isolation and boost wellbeing. Some homes could even involved residents in gardening, allotments or collaborations with local schools/groups to add to the celebrations.
The National Association of Care Catering encourages Local Authority Caterers and independent care home operators alike to embrace the fortnight, and for good reason. Older adults benefit from nutrient-dense meals, and eating seasonally is a simple way to achieve this. By following the nation’s natural cycle, from hearty cabbages and root vegetables in the colder months to juicy berries in the summer, meals are fresher, tastier, and often healthier too.
Seasonal eating doesn’t have to be expensive either. Planning meals around what’s in stock and using leftovers for stews or soups makes food go further. Frozen fruits and vegetables are also a great option as they keep their nutrients, help prevent waste, and can be sourced locally.
Many residents grew up with traditional British classics, and serving them during British Food Fortnight can spark fond memories and provide comfort, especially for those living with dementia. British Food Fortnight matters in care homes because it promotes better nutrition, connection, community engagement, and joy all essential for residents’ wellbeing.
