Coronavirus (COVID-19) is a new respiratory illness that has not previously been seen in humans. It was first detected in China and has since spread to a number of other countries. There are currently over 90,870 confirmed cases across 73 different countries. Within the UK the confirmed cases have risen to 116 with one case proving fatal.
Symptoms of the virus include a fever, dry cough and shortness of breath, the infection rarely causes a runny nose or sneezing. Around one in five cases are thought to be severe, which may result in more serious symptoms.
Current evidence states that the time spent to incubate the infection lasts between 1 and 14 days.
The main routes of transmission have been identified as the following:
- Direct contact to face, eyes and nose from droplets spraying from an infected person onto another person.
- Contamination from sneezing and coughing onto surfaces and then transferring via hands on to eyes and nose.
- Sneezing and Coughing onto hands and then transferring to other via handshake or other surfaces used by others.
With the likelihood of the infection to continue for the foreseeable future many suppliers have been taking their own safety measures to ensure the best possible service remains.
Bidfood have released a statement alongside a Q&A to help their customers understand the steps being taken to reduce the impact this has on their customer base.
